OK, why might we choose commercial qualifications as opposed to more traditional academic qualifications taught at tech’ colleges and universities? With fees and living expenses for university students climbing ever higher, and the IT sector’s increasing awareness that corporate based study is closer to the mark commercially, there has been a large rise in Microsoft, CISCO, Adobe and CompTIA accredited training paths that create knowledgeable employees at a fraction of the cost and time involved. Essentially, the learning just focuses on what’s actually required. It isn’t quite as lean as that might sound, but principally the objective has to be to cover the precise skills needed (alongside some required background) – without attempting to cover a bit about every other area (as universities often do).

Assuming a company understands what they’re looking for, then all they have to do is advertise for a person with the appropriate exam numbers. Syllabuses are all based on the same criteria and do not vary between trainers (in the way that degree courses can).

Each programme of learning must provide a commercially valid accreditation as an end-goal – and not a worthless ‘in-house’ printed certificate to hang in your hallway. From an employer’s perspective, only top businesses such as Microsoft, Cisco, Adobe or CompTIA (for example) will get you short-listed. Anything less won’t make the grade.

It’s essential to have an accredited exam preparation programme included in your course. Often students can get confused by going through practice questions that don’t come from official boards. Sometimes, the phraseology is unfamiliar and it’s important to prepare yourself for this. A way to build self-confidence is if you test your depth of understanding through tests and mock ups of exams to prepare you for taking the real deal.
